Sound Off

I wanted to know why those living south of Kansas University received letters at home reminding them not to park cars in the yards for basketball season, but those north of campus sell their yards all the time for football parking?

City Manager Mike Wildgen said city code generally prohibited off-street parking unless it was on a parking lot or driveway.

The law also provides that the City Commission or city manager can determine that parts of the city code are not to be enforced for specified locations for a period not to exceed 24 hours, Wildgen said. This included parking in yards near Memorial Stadium that was an accepted practice for football games before the "parking the yard" ordinance was approved.

Centennial neighborhood officials object to yard parking, Wildgen said, and as a result the city reminds residents of code requirements before basketball season.
