Who's paying for the salaries of Lawrence preschool teachers? And is it mandated as a program for the education of children or does that start at kindergarten?

Julie Boyle, communications director for Lawrence public schools, said the East Heights Early Childhood Family Education Center's programs are funded by state, federal and community grants, private donations, and the Lawrence public schools.

Neither preschool nor kindergarten is mandatory in Kansas, she noted. Programs serving students with disabilities, ages 3-21, are federally mandated.
