In light of the Lawrence public schools' budget crisis, how could it afford to send Mike Eltschinger and Nancy Horner to Phoenix for a week? How much did this trip cost taxpayers?
Julie Boyle, director of communications for the district, provided this answer: "As in any profession, ongoing training is important in the field of education. ... The conference dealt with the implementation of an online management system used to provide an enhanced delivery of curriculum and professional development. "District funds earmarked for technology staff development covered the $3,000 associated with conference registration, travel, materials, room and board. The two staff members who attended this conference will use what they learned to provide training for teachers in the school district."
