Can you tell me why the word "seed" is used in basketball? What does it mean and where did it originate?

According to the dictionary, to "seed" means to place selected teams or players in a tournament in certain places, so as to ensure that some teams or players will not meet in an early stage of the tournament. Seeding was first used in the 1911 U.S. Open tennis tournament. Before that, the defending champion always advanced to the final.
