Why wasn't the St. Patrick's Day Parade scheduled later in the day so Lawrence schoolchildren could watch it?
The parade was scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday because that is a time when it would least interfere with daily traffic congestion, according to St. Patrick's Committee chairman Gene Shaughnessy. The committee worked out the time with Lawrence Police. Any later and it would collide with police shift changes, after-school traffic and then rush-hour traffic, Shaughnessy said.
