Could you clarify the rules for what drivers must do when they pass an emergency vehicle on the side of the road?
State law says drivers must do one of two things if they pass a stationary emergency vehicle with its emergency lights on:
l If it's on a highway with at least two lanes in the same direction, "the driver shall proceed with due caution and, if possible and with due regard to the road, weather and traffic conditions, shall change lanes into a lane that is not adjacent to that of the stationary authorized emergency vehicle."
l If it's not that type of highway, or if it would be unsafe to try to change lanes, "the driver shall proceed with due caution," reduce speed and maintain a safe speed for conditions."
