I just got a notice that says the city's trash truck won't pick up the fireplace ashes that I'd set out. So what I am supposed to do with my ashes?

Bob Yoos, solid waste manager for the city of Lawrence, said city crews wouldn't pick up buckets of ashes "because there's no way to tell if they still have hot cinders in them." Cinders, he said, can cause fires both in the truck and at the landfill.

Yoos suggests that you put your ashes in a metal bucket, then fill the bucket with water. After letting the ashes soak, you can put them in a trash bag and set them on the curb for pickup.
