Why doesn't the Lawrence main post office downtown have more help working during peak business hours, such as between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.?

There is only room for four clerks to work at the front desk, and four people are working most, if not all, of the peak business period, Lawrence Postmaster Judy Raney said. A new machine will be installed at the post office sometime in the fall that could ease the waiting time at the front desk, Raney said. Called an automatic postal center, the machine will allow customers to follow directions on a screen to weigh and pay postage for packages, and the machine will then take in those packages.
