Given the dangers of talking on a cell phone while driving, do local police have a policy against officers doing that?
No.
Neither the Lawrence Police Department nor the Douglas County Sheriff's Office prohibits officers from talking on cell phones while driving, spokespeople for both agencies said.
Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a Lawrence Police spokesman, said there were times when officers must talk on a police radio or cell phone while driving. But he said officers were taught to pull off the road in situations where they couldn't talk and drive safely.
