My question involves reports in the past of the Japanese POW camps in Lawrence or near Lawrence during World War II. I'm just wondering whether it wouldn't be interesting to resurrect an investigation and see what truth there is to that rumor. It seems there used to be train cars down at 11th Street and Haskell Avenue that were reputed to have been used during the war to house Japanese detainees.
According to people at Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass., there were German prisoner of war camps at 11th Street and Haskell Avenue during World War II. There were never any Japanese POW camps here. Nothing remains today of the camps, which have been written about from time to time in the Journal-World.
