"Shoeless" Joe Jackson and seven of his Chicago White Sox teammates received lifetime suspensions in 1920 after it was determined they had fixed the outcome of the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. No player handed a lifetime suspension has ever been reinstated.

In another incident, Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain was handed a months-long suspension during the 1970 season when he was found to have invested in a bookmaking operation.
