How can the city of Lawrence justify spending the money on a roundabout and new curb and guttering at 17th and New Hampshire streets? Currently, it is only a two-stop intersection. It has a wide viewing area. The road and curb are in good condition, and I haven't heard of an accident there yet. How much is this going to cost?

City Manager Mike Wildgen said: the traffic-calming circle was requested by the Barker Neighborhood Assn. during a series of neighborhood meetings in conjunction with the traffic-calming study they requested. Records show two reported crashes in 2000, including one injury, and two reported crashes in 2001, he said.

The cost of the traffic circle is $26,500.
