Sound Off

I know that the Kansas University football team won the Big Eight Conference football championship in 1960, but that it was a disputed championship. Can you tell me why this championship was disputed?

KU would have won the 1960 Big Eight championship if it hadn't been forced to forfeit wins over Colorado and Missouri after it was learned the Jayhawks had used an ineligible player (halfback Bert Coan). On the field, KU posted a 6-0-1 league record -- the Jayhawks tied Oklahoma 13-13 -- but on paper wound up 4-2-1. MU won the official Big Eight title with a 7-0 record, Colorado was second at 6-1 and KU third.
