How does NASCAR determine the numbers for its racers? Like how did Dale Earnhardt Jr. get No. 8? Or how did Dale Jarrett get No. 88? If I decided go out and spend a couple million bucks and buy a NASCAR race car, how would I get my number?

Any driver who earned NASCAR points with a car number will have that number held for them to renew until Jan. 15 each year. If the number has not been renewed by that date, it will become available on a first-come, first-served basis. If a number is registered, it must be used and points gained by June 24 or the number will become available to another competitor. Only one- or two-digit numbers may be registered.
