Are any groups sending supplies to Florida to help the people devastated by Hurricane Charley?

The Salvation Army and American Red Cross are handling most of the private-sector relief effort. Both, however, are discouraging would-be donors from sending supplies.

"If people want to help, we're suggesting they make financial contributions to either the Red Cross or the Salvation Army," said Judy Blocher, head of the Red Cross office in Lawrence.

"We're declining offers of things like food and clothing because by the time it's sorted, cleaned, transported, stored and distributed, it's cost-prohibitive," she said. "You're better off sending money and letting people buy whatever it is they need the most."
