Won't increasing the Baker Wetlands acreage for the expanded South Lawrence Trafficway also increase our community's population of mosquitoes, posing a serious health risk? Isn't this something our community should consider?

According to Steve Ashe, an entomology professor at Kansas University, expanding the wetlands could increase the mosquito population. But it's just as likely to increase the number of mosquito-eating predators.

"Typically, a healthy wetlands does not increase mosquito problems," he said.

Artificial habitats around our homes where water accumulates are breeding grounds for the pest.
