How, if at all, might the closing of Lawrence Memorial Hospital's psychiatric unit affect the Lawrence school district?
Bruce Passman, the district's executive director of special services, said the Sept. 1 closure of the inpatient unit, which primarily serves adults, could affect the school district.
Shutting down the unit may siphon psychiatric services from the community, he said.
In addition, Passman said there was sometimes a correlation between mental health issues and family functioning. If a parent must go to a psychiatric unit in Topeka, Shawnee or Leavenworth to get needed services, Passman said the move could exacerbate stressful family circumstances and complicate the district's ability to work with a family's child.
