I would like to know why the Lawrence Police Department squad cars do not have a metal partition between the front and back seats. Will they install them in the future?
According to Sgt. Mike Pattrick, four of the department's patrol cars are so equipped, and they're placed at strategic locations on patrol to help transport uncooperative detainees. The department doesn't have them on all cars for two reasons: They can make the driving compartment too cramped for taller officers; and they can be uncomfortable to people who aren't under arrest but who have to talk with police -- for example, during interviews after traffic accidents.
