I distinctly remember when the state wanted the public to approve the lottery, it said it would raise all sorts of money for the schools. Since the lottery was approved I have never heard of that promised money. How much goes to the schools and can they increase the percentage for the current crisis? There is a scratch-off ticket just to benefit the military veterans. Why not make one to benefit the schools?
Jane Elliott, public information officer for the Kansas Lottery, said it was a common misperception that Kansas Lottery revenue was supposed to go toward schools.
"It was always basically for economic development," Elliott said. She said some people confuse the Kansas Lottery with the Missouri Lottery, which does channel its profits to schools.
As far as changing the way lottery funds are spent, or creating a game that would benefit schools, Elliott said that would be up to the state Legislature.
