We live in the country, and our neighbors let their dogs run loose and they damage property. What can be done about this? What would happen if the dogs were shot to control the problem?
Douglas County Sheriff Rick Trapp's response:
"The Douglas County Commission has passed an ordinance regarding Dangerous and Nuisance Animals in the unincorporated areas. Owners can face criminal penalties if their pets cause harm to persons or damage and destroy property belonging to others. The owners could also be held responsible for damages.
"State law allows citizens to shoot trespassing dogs under certain circumstances, depending on the facts of each case. The shooting of dogs is an extreme measure and can be dangerous. Therefore, I recommend that the resident in this case contact the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. A deputy will take a report, conduct an investigation and attempt to help resolve the problem."
