I heard the Kansas Turnpike plans to build extra lanes between Kansas City and Lawrence, making it a six-lane road. When will that be built?

The expansion will be between the Lecompton interchange and Topeka, a total of 15 miles, said Tom Wurdeman, chief engineer with the Kansas Turnpike Authority. Design work is in process now to add one eastbound and one westbound lane. Work will begin next year and continue through 2005.

A second expansion project will come later, probably in 2008, to rebuild the eastern and western terminals in Lawrence and replace the bridge over the Kansas River, Wurdeman said.

There are no plans at this time to add lanes between Lawrence and Kansas City, Kan.
