Sound Off

My question is in response to an April 25 article in the Journal-World that said Lawrence was such a great city for recycling. I was just wondering why there is no curbside recycling available here?

According to Bob Yoos, superintendent at the city's Solid Waste Division, curbside recycling in Lawrence doesn't pass the cost-benefit test. Recent studies in Lawrence have shown that a curbside collection program for recyclables would raise the overall recycling rate about 3.5 percentage points above its current rate of 32 percent but would cost about $5.84 to $8 more per month per household than the current rate of $11.25.
