I had a call today from somebody saying he was collecting money for the sheriff's association deputies. I wanted to know if that was a scam or if the law enforcement agencies collecting just don't abide by the no-call list?
Both the Kansas Sheriff's Assn. based in Hutchinson, and the American Deputy Sheriff's Assn. based in Monroe, La., periodically conduct fund-raising drives by telephone. They are nonprofit, charitable organizations and such organizations are not prohibited from telemarketing by the Kansas no-call law.
These organizations do not, however, ask for credit card information over the telephone, nor do they send someone to your residence to collect money. If you agree to make a donation, they will send you material in the mail about their organization and you can then send in your donation. You are not obligated to send your donation if you change your mind after the call.
