Is it legal to shoot fireworks off the sides of township roads and county roads, or the right-of-way on those roads?
"No, it isn't," Douglas County Sheriff Rick Trapp said. Nor can you discharge fireworks on right-of-way adjoining a public road.
Also illegal, Trapp said: Shooting fireworks into, under or on a car; discharging fireworks within 50 feet of a retail fireworks stand, or within 1,000 feet of a hospital; and using fireworks on private property without the property owner's permission.
Use of fireworks is allowed in rural Douglas County from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to midnight Friday. The city of Lawrence prohibits all private use of fireworks.
