With the police now saying the beating of Jeffrey Medis wasn't a hate crime, will the benefit concert for him still go on as planned?
Jericho van de Velde, who is helping organize the event, said plans hadn't changed. The benefit concert is planned for Jan. 25 at the Bottleneck, 737 N.H.
Lawrence Police say Medis was struck once Dec. 6 outside Replay Lounge, 946 Mass., after an argument with a group of people. Medis said he didn't remember the attack and said he thought he was beaten because he is gay.
He suffered multiple injuries and doesn't have medical insurance.
"Jeffrey needs help with his medical bills no matter what the cops call it," van de Velde said.
