Why are county offices open for Presidents Day when others are closed?

Because Douglas County employees want it that way, said Craig Weinaug, county administrator.

"There is an Employee Advisory Committee, made up of representatives of all the county departments," Weinaug said Monday, taking advantage of the slow day to clear his desk of memos and minor tasks lingering for the past few weeks. "The county commissioners basically say there are 10 holidays per year, and the employee committee decides when those 10 holidays are taken. They make a recommendation, and the commission approves it."

Presidents Day didn't make the committee's list of holidays.
