I was wondering why the Lawrence school district was getting new computers for the office staff when they have a budget problem? What are they doing with the ones that they just took out?

Julie Boyle, the district's communications director, said computers purchased at this time were replacements rather than additions to the inventory. Older systems are being replaced because they don't support current software or state online-reporting requirements, she said.

Some of the old computers are used elsewhere in the district, while units no longer in working condition are offered at district property auctions.

Money for the purchases was drawn from the district's capital outlay fund rather than the district's general fund.
