What do city crews that pick up leaves and grass clippings do with all the plastic bags? Is there any way I could retrieve them?

City crews cut the bags open and dump the leaves and clippings in the truck. Because the bags are not recyclable, eventually, they're taken to the landfill.

"They are not suitable for reuse," said Mollie Mangerich, operations supervisor at the city's Waste Reduction and Recycling Division.

The preferred containers for yard waste are cans, biodegradable paper bags and carts.

Ninety-gallon wheeled carts are available by calling the city's Solid Waste Division, 832-3022.
