Why are the Centennial or Riverside school buildings not possible sites for Lawrence Alternative High School?
Leni Salkind, vice president of the Lawrence school board, said the high cost of renovating an elementary school for use by secondary students outweighed benefits of adapting an old structure.
There has been opposition on the board to putting LAHS at Centennial, because it is so close to Lawrence High School.
Riverside is too small and inconveniently located north of Interstate 70, Salkind said.
The school board closed Riverside, Centennial and East Heights in May. East Heights is now the district's early-childhood center. Riverside is to be sold. Centennial will be kept by the district.
LAHS is in Holcom Park, 2600 W. 25th St.
