What should I do if I find a dead bird in my yard?

Because dead birds may be carriers of the West Nile virus, they should be handled with care. First, call the hot line set up by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for reporting dead birds. The toll-free number is (866) 452-7810.

Callers will learn criteria for determining whether the bird can be tested for the virus and how to store it until a health official can pick it up. Not all dead birds will be tested for the virus.
