My roommates and I were looking to rent a house for next fall. After looking at the house and filling out the rental applications, the landlord called and asked if we wanted to sign the lease. We told him that we did and that we would contact him in a few days so we could meet up and sign it. When we called him a few days later, he had rented the house to someone else. Is there any legal ramifications to verbally agreeing to sign the lease and then just giving it away to someone else?
Probably not, said Michele Kessler, associate director of Legal Services for Students at Kansas University.
"Unless the application has some agreement to hold an apartment, or an apartment guarantee if approved, then the landlord would not be bound to rent them that apartment until the lease was signed," she said.
