Sound Off

Why was it necessary for the Kansas University Alumni Association to charge $5 to get into the New Orleans pep rallies?

Kirk Cerny, senior vice president of membership services for the Alumni Association, said: "To start, the cost of our rally space was significant. Additionally, audio-visual costs go up when we add sound and video so all 2,500 Jayhawks can see and hear what's happening.

"We paid for more security to better ensure that our people and their possessions were safe. We also included fire and emergency medical services this year.

"Finally, the admission helps host our pep band and spirit squad. These hard-working students volunteer to perform at our rallies, and, as with any KU student, meals and sodas go a long way in saying 'Thank you.'"
