Could you tell us why every time we get on the turnpike we pay for a human being to hand us a ticket, when we could save tons on wages if we used a machine?
The Kansas Turnpike Authority is testing what it calls a DATIM (duel automatic ticket issuing machine) at the westbound Topeka interchange, turnpike spokeswoman Lisa Callahan said. Another one will be installed in the Wichita area for further testing. The number of turnpike employees would be reduced through attrition, she said.
"There will always be toll collectors, partly because 50 percent of our customers are one-time cash customers," she said. "That just requires a little more assistance."
