In regard to the article in the paper about the shooting death of Rick Dowdell, what ever happened to the police officer? Was he disciplined? Is he still a police officer? Where is he now?
Officer William Garrett was suspended from the Lawrence Police Department on July 20, 1970, four days after Rick Dowdell's death. He was reinstated two days later after a coroner's inquest cleared him of any wrongdoing. The initial finding was later upheld by a Kansas Bureau of Investigation check.
Many in the city's black community disputed the findings.
Soundoff was unable to confirm reports that Garrett later accepted a position with the Johnson County Sheriff's Department and that he recently retired.
