What are the Kansas Department of Transportation's definitions of a bypass and a trafficway?

Neither has official definitions within the various engineering standards the department uses, KDOT spokesman Marty Matthews said. But in general, a bypass simply refers to a road that skirts around a specific location, often a business district of a community. A trafficway is a term the department primarily has used in describing the South Lawrence Trafficway, which is a type of bypass.
