Why are they putting extra-wide sidewalks along the south side of Clinton Parkway? I've heard it was for emergency vehicles in case the parkway was crowded. Is that true?
No, said City Engineer Terese Gorman.
"The existing asphalt path was constructed when Clinton Parkway was constructed in the mid-'70s," she said. "At that time, it met (national) standards for shared-use paths."
Since that time, she said, the standards have changed. A 10-foot-wide sidewalk is now required for shared use, which includes walking, jogging, bicycling, inline skating and other recreational purposes.
"This path is not intended to be used by emergency vehicles under any circumstances," Gorman said.
