What is the situation with all-day kindergarten in the poor, east-side schools? Are they going to reintroduce full-day kindergarten for the sake of literacy at New York and East Heights schools?

Randy Weseman, superintendent of Lawrence public schools, said the school board decided not to continue funding of all-day kindergarten programs.

Last year, five of 19 elementary schools in the district had full-day programs. All kindergarten students in the district will attend half-day programs this year.

"It would be my hope that we could reintroduce full-day kindergarten into the system," he said. "That's a function of the budget."
