I read the item about the Lawrence Police officer losing his flashlight in the club the other night, and it raised a couple of questions: Why are Lawrence Police carrying $100 flashlights, and what kind of flashlight does one get for $100?

The need for a police officer to be able to see at night is paramount, Lawrence Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. The flashlights that provide the most light and are reliable are expensive and at the cost of the individual officer.

The flashlight mentioned was a rechargeable Mag-Lite flashlight, Pattrick said.

"These flashlights are expensive, but when the ability to see in the dark can save lives, it is well worth the money the officers spend," Pattrick said.
