How often does Lawrence Fire & Medical hire firefighters? What is the cutoff date for getting their EMT license?

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical normally conducts an annual recruitment, Deputy Chief Mark Bradford said. When that occurs depends on retirements and other factors that might reduce the ranks.

The department tries to keep nine part-time firefighters hired and ready to go to full-time when needed.

Anyone wanting to become a Lawrence-Douglas County firefighter can fill out an "interest card" at the city's personnel office at City Hall.

As for emergency medical technicians, training is provided by the department. A firefighter has a year after being hired to become certified.
