I saw something that looked like a chipmunk in downtown Lawrence the other day. Are there chipmunks in northeast Kansas?

Yes, said Thor Holmes, collection manager at Kansas University's Natural History Museum.

The critter may have been an Eastern chipmunk, the only type of chipmunk in Kansas. The western edge of its habitat reaches into Kansas, but it's fairly rare near Lawrence.

It also might have been one of several types of ground squirrels found in Douglas County. The most common is the thirteen-lined ground squirrel, which is still fairly rare here.
