What does the suffix "-stan" mean in Pakistan and Afghanistan?

Erik Herron, assistant professor of political science and a Central Asian expert at Kansas University, said: "The suffix '-stan' means land or country. Afghanistan is thus the 'land of the Afghans.' Uzbekistan is the 'land of the Uzbeks.' This applies to all of the '-stans' except Pakistan, which was derived from a combination of the names of ethnic groups in the country."
