I've read that Muslims hope for fighting in Afghanistan to cease before Ramadan starts. What is the Ramadan holiday, and when does it begin?

Ramadan is considered a time of worship and contemplation. It is marked by daylight fasting and Muslim efforts to strengthen family and community ties.

Ramadan always begins in the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, falling on the day after the new moon's crescent appears. The Islamic Society of North America predicts that will be Saturday.
