At the east end of the turnpike there's a sign that says "No jake brakes." What does "jake brakes" mean?

A: Jake brakes is a term referring to a method large trucks use to decelerate in addition to using regular brakes, Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Mark Engholm said. In jake-breaking, the truck feeds exhaust back into the engine, helping the truck stop more quickly than using just ordinary brakes.

Prohibition against jake brakes is usually enforced because the method causes a loud noise, sometimes disturbing nearby residents, Engholm said.
