How can I tell if an ant is a fire ant? Whom do I call to report a suspected fire ant colony?

Glen Salsbury of the Kansas Department of Agriculture says the easiest way to determine whether ants are fire ants is to poke the ant hill with a stick. Most ants will run away; fire ants will run out of their hill by the thousands.

Salsbury urged a group of Lawrence residents at a public meeting Saturday not to treat ant hills with insecticides. Instead, he said, residents should contact the state to administer the treatment.
