Doesn't Lawrence have a graffiti ordinance requiring property owners to cover graffiti within a specific period of time? Graffiti has been on the Borders store for at least a week and a half.

City Manager Mike Wildgen said there is an ordinance. He said: "After proper notice ... is given, the owner has 14 days ... to remove the graffiti. The code provides the owner an opportunity to appeal. ... If the owner fails to remove the graffiti ..., the city will (have) the graffiti ... removed and the costs of the removal will be a personal obligation of the owner and a lien on the property."

A property owner who fails to remove the graffiti may be punished by a fine of not less than $250 or more than $1,000, and/or by imprisonment for not more than 6 months.
