I have heard from various community members and through the newspaper that Baldwin residents pay the highest property taxes in Douglas County and perhaps in the state, and I would like to know if that is true.

According to Baldwin City Administrator Larry Paine, the city does have the county's highest levy at 129.713 mills. A mill is $1 in property taxes for every $1,000 in assessed valuation. Levies for other Douglas County cities are: 105.3 mills in Eudora; 87.7 mills in Lecompton; and in Lawrence the rate varies from 101.5 mills to about 103.6 mills.

Paine said Baldwin lacks the commercial property assessment compared to Eudora and Lawrence, which results in lower mill rates in those cities.
