Southwest's seventh-graders placed 23rd among 51 teams in their age division. A team from Shanghai, China, won.

The SWJH students built two robots from Legos to perform a series of tasks, including retrieval of an object and playing chase and catch.

Team members were Trent Allen, James Dean, Aaron Ideus, Andrew Killen, Kyle Mendenhall, David Turvey and Daniel Zehr. Their sponsor was Amy Weishaar, instructor in the gifted student program. The group toured the Capitol and Lincoln Memorial and met U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan.
