On July 10, we witnessed a lawn company truck filling its large lawn sprayer tank from a fire hydrant just east of Baldwin High School. It was always our belief that only emergency vehicles were allowed to do this. If this is not correct, then do all lawn companies get to use water from the fire hydrants at taxpayers' expense?
Baldwin City Administrator Larry Paine said the city does allow people to tap into fire hydrants, but only with an attached water meter that measures the water and then the city charges the person. He said typically only building contractors who need water for an extended period of time have been allowed to use the hydrants and then were billed.
