Who is running for school board in Lawrence? How much longer do people have to file for the election?
Four candidates had filed as of Friday. County offices were closed Monday.
Official candidates are: Gordon Longabach, retired U.S. Army officer; Leni Salkind, incumbent board member; Kurt Thurmaier, Kansas University faculty member; and Dale Vestal, Centennial School site council president.
Austin Turney, board president, said last week he plans to run for re-election.
Candidates will compete for three available seats on the board. The terms of Salkind, Turney and James Hilliard end in June.
The filing deadline is noon Jan. 23, at the Douglas County Courthouse, 11th and Massachusetts streets.
If seven or more candidates file, a primary will be conducted March 6. The general election will be April 3.
