The Lawrence school district uses cable TV channel 26 as an information channel. Why don't they post school closings on it?
Julie Boyle, director of communications for the district, said the district didn't yet have the capability to remotely update channel 26.
The district's inclement weather procedures direct parents to tune to area radio and television stations for school closing announcements.
Boyle said staff notifies KLWN-AM, 132; KLZR-FM, 105.9; and, KANU-FM, 91.5 in Lawrence. These stations make frequent announcements within moments of notification. The district also notifies Topeka television channels 13, 27 and 49 and radio station WIBW-FM, 97.3.
The Lawrence district is part of the Kansas City Area Emergency School Communications System, which makes announcements on most Kansas City radio and television stations. This network includes channels 4, 5 and 9, which carry a moving line of school closing information across the TV screen.
In addition, the district Web site (www.usd497.org) contains school closing information.
